Home medical visit: for whom, why, and how?

By Dre Aurélia Nha-Huyen Nguyen Gouez, family physician and medical director of French origin, based in Quebec since 2016.

In France, consulting your family physician at home is still a common practice, particularly for seniors or families with young children. In Quebec, this option remains little known... and yet, it can make all the difference. Since January 2024, our clinic Allodocteur.ca has offered this service in Montreal to make family medicine more accessible, fast, and humane.

Who are home medical visits for?

Home visits are intended for anyone who, for practical or medical reasons, has difficulty traveling:

Seniors: fragility, mobility issues, convalescence after hospitalization.

Young children: fever, ear infections, coughs, rashes... It is often simpler for the doctor to come to the house.

Immunocompromised or vulnerable people: to reduce exposure to viruses in waiting rooms.

Patients suffering from anxiety disorders or psychological limitations.

Large families or very busy people: a precious time saver.

Post-hospital or post-operative follow-ups.

Why choose a home medical visit?

Comfort and peace of mind: you stay at home, in a familiar environment.

Less stress: no transportation, no prolonged waiting.

Direct observation of the living environment: this sometimes allows the doctor to adapt their advice (hygiene, autonomy, safety).

Fast access to a doctor: at Allodocteur.ca, visits often happen with same-day availability.

Quality of the relationship: a home medical consultation is often more humane and less rushed.

How does it work?

At Allodocteur.ca, everything is designed to be simple and fast:

  1. Booking an appointment: online on our site or by phone.

  2. Choosing a time slot: according to your availability.

  3. On-site consultation: the doctor travels with their medical equipment.

  4. Prescriptions, health check-ups, work notes: everything is provided on-site or sent via secure email.

  5. Follow-up: if necessary, a virtual consultation or a second visit may be proposed.

Consultations are private (outside of RAMQ, Quebec health insurance), starting from $279, depending on complexity and distance. A receipt for insurance is provided at each consultation.

In conclusion

The home medical visit puts the patient back at the heart of care. It is particularly suited to modern realities: busy schedules, family, an aging population... At Allodocteur.ca, we believe that offering this service restores the family physician's role of proximity, as it is in France.
